Umoja Launches First Book Club

The Umoja Community Education Foundation is proud to announce the Umoja University Book Club! We're inviting you to join a community of intellectuals to celebrate the literary work of some of the world's more renowned thinkers. This book club will feature literary work from African American authors whose writings have shifted our collective thought and powered the movements for social justice, academic equity, and much more.

To begin our book club, the Umoja statewide staff has selected Dr. Bettina Love's "We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom" With over 65,000 books sold, Dr. Love's book has received praise from authors such as bell hooks, Marc Lamont Hill and 2018 National Teacher of the Year, Mandy Manning.

bell hooks described the book as "a profoundly fresh perspective on teaching, using both the language of critical thinking and radical resistance.”
