Khalfani H. Mackey

Khalfani H. Mackey is a student leader, advocate, and community college scholar whose approach to service is rooted in a simple philosophy: place yourself where decisions are made so that the voices of those too often left out of those spaces are represented.

Mackey currently serves as the Student Trustee for the Kern Community College District and is serving his second term as President of the Bakersfield College Student Government Association. He also serves as a peer mentor with A2MEND, supporting the academic, personal, and leadership development of African American male students.

His connection to Umoja has been central to his educational journey. As an Umoja Scholar, Mackey has participated in Umoja conferences, received the Umoja AYA Award, and earned a competitive scholarship that supported his international study in Egypt and Ghana, where he further explored African history, culture, and the African Diaspora. He continues his Umoja education at Bakersfield College under the mentorship of Dr. Paula Parks.

Now serving on the Umoja Community Education Foundation Board of Directors, Mackey brings the perspective of a student who has directly experienced the power of culturally responsive education. His work is driven by a commitment to student success, educational equity, cultural identity, and ensuring that students have meaningful representation in the institutions and systems that shape their futures.
